Home Away From Home

December 2, 2006

Day 7 @ Mia Animal Hospital

Yes, Mi Mi's been away from home a week now. The doctor is able to lower his blood sugar with medicine and insulin, Mi Mi will be able to come home on Monday.

Today Mi Mi has a chance to come out of the cage and walk around the hospital a little. He seems to enjoy that very much.

Hmm...This is a good spot to watch what everyone is doing!

Is this Dr. Chen's privete office? Can I go in?

Ha ha ha...Mr. Mi Mi's very smart, he waits and walks right in the privite office when Dr. Chen opens the door.

Everyone at the hospital is very good to Mi Mi, we're very lucky. Mi Mi will come home on Monday, I can't wait!

Day 6 @ Mia Animal Hospital

No I.V. for Mi Mi today, so he was able to walk around the hospital while the staff are taking their lunch break. Naturally, he was very curious to see the place. He walked back and forth between different rooms. It must have been good to come out of the cage and stretch his legs for a bit.

Day 5 @ Mia Animal Hospital

This is what I saw when I walked in to the room today...Peter and Mi Mi sharing a nice moment together. We went seperately to Mia Animal Hospital, Peter was already there when I arrived. By the look of it, Mi Mi seemed to enjoy his water very much.

I was able to pick him up and hold him and make him be in the pictures with me. He didn't mind at all...ha ha ha ha.

Since I wouldn't let him go anywhere after he got on the stool, he started to clean himself, after that he just gave up trying to jump to the floor.

Mi Mi's blood sugar level is down to 300, although not quite perfect yet, but it's better than yesterday's 500. We hope to hear more good news tomorrow.

Looking Sharp

Day 4 of Mi Mi's hospital adventure

Mi Mi looked pretty good today. When we arrived the hospital he was just resting in his "room".

Dr. Chen said that Mi Mi slept near the water dish and got wet today, they had to clean him up. I told the Dr. that he's slept near the water bowl in our bathtub when he was home last week (around the time he was feeling weak) I think he did it because he didn't have to go very far to get a drink, Dr. Chen agreed it was a very smart way for Mi Mi to conserve his energy.

Cleaning is still a big part of Mi Mi's routine,

He pays special attention to the bandaged area on his legs.

Ready for my close-up Mr. DeMille.

Spending quality time with daddy.

Day 3 of Mi Mi's hospital adventure

Today is day #3. We went to see him in the afternoon, Peter didn't stay long because he had a class to teach. But I was able to stay with him for almost 2 hours in the afternoon.

Mi Mi has a new next door neighbor, a white Persian cat named Mi Mi. Now there's a Black Mi Mi and a White Mi Mi at the hospital living next door to each other.

He looked a bit tired when I first saw him, probably because he was asleep when I got there. Notice that little patch of shaved area on his hind leg? That's where Dr. Chen drew blood every 2 hours to test his blood sugar level. The doctor. told me his blood sugar is still high, the treatment isn't lowering blood sugar very much, he'll have to take insulin shots when he leaves the hospital.

I went again this evening around 8:30 after my yoga class. He was just resting, not doing much of anything. He sure is getting plenty of rest there.

Well, I'm glad Dr. Chen and his staff are taking good care of him. Everyone there told me how nice and gentle Mi Mi is, I'm so proud of him.

Mr. Mi Mi, the House Feels So Empty When You're Not Here

Mi Mi has been acting a little strange for the past few days.

He wasn't eating very much, he seemed to lose his strengt and some of his weight as well.

All he did was sleep, drink water from his red bowl we left for him in the bathtub and use the litter box.

First I thought maybe he was mad at us for leaving him at home, alone, this past Sunday night. (Peter and I drove to Tai Chung for a concert and didn't come back till Monday night.)

Then I thought maybe it's because of the weather, for it's gotten to be more and more winter like. Mi Mi usually gets to be more lethargic when it gets cold. I even tried giving him some catnip but he wasn't interested.

After seeing him like this for days, I took him to the vet on Sunday. Dr. Chen did a blood test and found that Mi Mi's blood sugar level was high and suspected that he had diabetes. The doctor asked Mi Mi to stay over night at the hospital so he can give him IV shot and monitor him.

Peter went to see him the same afternoon and brought him the blue "Citibank" blanket, one of his favorites. He was very happy to see Peter. Even came out of the cage for a big hug.

Monday, Day 2 of Mi Mi's hospital stay. We were there to see him around 1:30pm. He looked much better than yesterday, he was more energetic. I was able to get him to eat some of the food that were in his dish. He also wanted to come out of his "room" to walk around. But the IV was still going, with the tube attached to his front leg, he wasn't able to get very far.

Dr. Chen confirmed today that Mi Mi has diabetes. Mi Mi needs to stay 5 more days at the hospital for the Dr. to figure out what's the best treatment for him, he will have take insulin orally or get shots twice a day to control his blood sugar level.

So it's been 3 days not having Mi Mi around. It feels very very strange to come home and not see his silly face. It feels strange when I use the computer he's not here to hog my keyboard or the mouse. I wish he can come home soon, very soon.

9/7/2006, after 18 months...

Finally...
NYC here I come.

Bye honey, see you in 10 days!

My last 2 drinks before boarding the plane. (because you know, no liquid with your carry-on) I hope no one makes bombs out of yogurt drinks or they maybe forbidden at the airport as well.

And here's the 747 that would take me back to NYC. The flight was scheduled to depart at 16:25, but the air-condition wasn't working properly, so after boarding the plane, they made us wait till it's fixed. We sat on the ground with no AC, not even air, it was HOT. 30 minutes later, we were ready for take-off. And away we go!

Looking out of the window from seat #12K.

Is this the moon or the sun?
After flying 9 hours we arrived in Anchorage, Alaska for a stop-over. Nothing to see there except the duty-free shops, but it was good to walk around and stretch the legs a bit after sitting for so long. With all the carry-on restrictions, the shop was still selling perfumes and make-ups in liquid form. I asked the shop lady and she told me that after you purchase those items, they'll take it directly to the gate where you re board the plane. Isn't that convenient?
The plane we were flying needed some serious rest, I think. Because after we re-boarded the plane, the AC was out, and once again we had to wait for the ground crew to fix it. After flying another 6-7 hours we were finally in NYC. My luggage came out rather early, I think I might have been one of the first to come out. I waited a little bit for my folks and boy, I was happy to see mom and dad when they came running toward me! It's been too long! So after almost 20 since I left my Taipei home, I'm in New York.

Who Is in My Drawer?

Mr. Mi Mi Hsu found a nice spot in my drawer today.

He hasn't done this in a while, so he moved pretty quickly as soon as I opened it.

The space was a bit small for him, but he moved around and found himself a comfortable place to settle in.

People do strange things when they get older, do cats to that as well?
